Two Staples of Central Arizona College Athletics Hang Thier Vaquero Hats
6/30/2021
Two long standing stalwarts for the CAC Athletic Community are officially retiring from their respective duty and they leave behind a legacy that will for sure guarantee them into the school's Hall of Fame and potentially the NJCAA Hall of Fame. Chuck Schnoor and Paul Tavares both started their paths at CAC in different sports, but ended up with the same goal, to produce exceptional student-athletes while winning National Championships.
Chuck started his tenure at CAC as a basketball coach in 1997 and had great success, ending his coaching career with a winning record. Little did he know when he took over as the Head Coach in basketball that he would one day fill the role of an administrator for the Vaqueros and Vaqueras. In 2011 Chuck was given the daunting task as Athletic Director, why would this prove to be daunting? Because the success CAC already had established due to its history of winning National Championships and its pedigree. Most would consider staying in the coaching realm but Chuck decided it was time for a change and a greater challenge, to continue the success of the athletics program while building his own positive reputation and image of CAC Athletics. During Chuck's tenure as AD, he advocated for FT positions within the coaching staff, something close to his heart and personal beliefs. That decision played dividends, as the Vaqueros and Vaqueras won numerous ACCAC Conference and Regional Titles, and over 5 National Championships during Schnoor's span. Chuck will be surely missed and has enshrined himself as one of the greatest coaches and AD's in CAC history. Paul Tavares leaves behind his own legacy as the Cross Country and Track Coach for the Vaqueros and Vaqueras.
Paul started coaching in 2010, where he was an assistant with CAC Hall of Fame Coach Mike Gray, and quickly learned the ropes to success as he won a National Championship with the Vaqueras Cross Country Team that year. The following year, Coach Gray retired and left the reigns with Paul who channeled his inner vaquero and took the bull by the horns, winning 4 more National Championships during his span as HC from 2011-2019. Paul continued the success of the cross country and track programs for 10 years until his retirement in 2019 after the cross country season. During his span, he won multiple ACCAC Conference and Region titles and had 3 different individual National Champions for Cross Country. Paul remains with the CAC Community as a Professor in Biology and maintains his certification as a Chiropractor. He lives in Tucson with his wife Lindsay and their two children David and Hannah.
