Vaqueros Mourn Loss of Larry Nowlin

Central Arizona College and the Vaquero baseball family lost a member of their family on the morning of November 29 as Larry Nowlin passed away.   Nowlin, 63, who was battling Parkinson's disease, had a long baseball coaching career with stops at UNLV, Arizona Western College and Central Arizona College.  He was an assistant to Kenny Richardson for five seasons before becoming the head coach from 1987-1990.  Known for his rigorous training regimen and dedication to hard work Nowlin had an overall record of 108-95 as the head coach, but his impact went much deeper than his wins and losses.  His connection to his players may be his lasting legacy at CAC.

"Larry was like a second father to not only me, but to the whole team," remembers former player Brad Holland.  "Half our roster was from east of the Mississippi and his wife Jan was his and our biggest support system.  Larry was so excited that he and Jan had 35 extended family members each year.  I watched and learned how to treat people on and off the field from Larry.  By watching him on a daily basis I learned each person is different on how to motivate and teach the game of life." Holland continued, "Larry was a master at pushing the right buttons of each athlete.  Larry was our first mentor on learning the game of life."

Nowlin was born in Mishiwaka, Indiana in 1953 and graduated from Rincon high school and earned a bachelors and master's degree from Arizona State University and Northern Arizona University respectively.

"Our thoughts are certainly with the Nowlin family," said current head coach Anthony Gilich.  "Many of his former players have already reached out showing the impact that he still has on their lives today."
